Service of Remembrance - 2016

Jimservn
A Giant "Thank You" and "Job Well Done" to Jim O'Grady and the Kiwanis Club of Glen Ridge, the Key Club, the Mayor and Council, the GRPD, the GR DPW, and everyone else who helped make our premier Borough event - The GR Parade, Service of Remembrance, and Town Picnic - a huge success against some tough weather odds.

Glen Ridge is a town that has never forgotten the men it sent to war who never returned, and that continues to honor their memory - may they rest in peace, and may we never need any more to do the same.

Rain? What Rain!!!
The Parade, Memorial Service & Picnic are all ON!

Mem2-370
It is Memorial Day - and what better place to celebrate than right here in Glen Ridge?

The celebration starts at 11am with the parade down Ridgewood Avenue - from Baldwin Street to Bloomfield Avenue. Then the Service of Remembrance at the War Memorials. Finally, a town picnic at the Glen Ridge Train Station.

See you there!

HOLIDAY TREE RE-LIGHTING:
TONIGHT AT 4:30

FB1

Tonight's the night!

For 3 years, the Glen Ridge Holiday Tree has been dark because Superstorm Sandy destroyed the old lights.

After a successful fundraising effort, spearheaded by the GR Kiwanis Club and the Glen Ridge Rotary Club, more than $15,000 was raised to restore the lights, and tonight we enjoy the fruits of their labor and your generosity:

The Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony starts at 4:30. Carols will be performed by the Gas Lamp Players and hot cocoa and cookies will be provided by The Friends of the Library. You can also bring Toys For Tots donations - make a child's Holiday Season a little happier by donating a new toy to our local Toys For Tots project.

I hope to see you there!

Fundraising Goal Met!
Our Holiday Tree Will Return!

FB1

You did it!

Earlier this year, we told you how Superstorm Sandy had destroyed the lights on our beautiful Glen Ridge Holiday Tree, and that it would cost $15,000 to put new lights on the tree - money the municipal government just didn't have.

With the blessing of Mayor Hughes and the GR Borough Council, we asked the citizens of Glen Ridge to step-up to the challenge and raise the money. Right from the start, our two wonderful Community Service Clubs - The Glen Ridge Kiwanis Club  and The Rotary Club of Glen Ridge - came through, big time! Working together, they agreed to provide a 100% match to every dollar we raised for the Holiday Tree by October 1st - all the way up to $7,500.

Superstorm Sandy destroyed the lights on our beautiful Glen Ridge Holiday Tree. It will cost $15,000 to put new lights on the tree - money the municipal government just doesn't have.

That means it's time for us - the Citizens of Glen Ridge - to step up!

And I have some great news - The Rotary Club of Glen Ridge and the Glen Ridge Kiwanis Club have stepped up - big time! Working together, they have agreed to provide a 100% match to every dollar we can raise for the Holiday Tree by October 1st - all the way up to $7,500.

Checks should be made out to:

Sunset Classic Tonight -
Expect Traffic

SunsetClassic370

It's that time again, tonight is the 26th annual Sunset Classic. Things will start jamming up about 6:30.

If you are not participating, I strongly advise you to do your best to avoid the Northeast quadrant of town (and the adjoining section of Bloomfield), as the race route runs Westward up Sunset from Broad Street, South down the entire length of "Big Forest" Avenue, and then back down the hill on Osborne.

Expect traffic Delays on Ridgewood Avenue, there will be police officers there to assist in directing you to your location. All the streets East of Ridgewood from the Country Club south to Osborne will be subject to Closure and Parking Restrictions and all the nearby streets will be much more congested than normal.

The Borough has advised drivers to use Belleville Avenue or Watchung Avenue as alternate routes into Bloomfield.

Street Tree Pruning to Begin Soon

SnowTreesForest3
Believe it or not - spring is on its way and our young street trees are undergoing pruning.   The work is being done by the NJ Tree Foundation under the supervision of Borough Arborist Richard Wolowicz.

This corrective pruning of all young street trees will ensure that each specimen has a single dominate leader (or trunk) growing straight.  Pruning crews also remove low and overlapping branches.   Some trees may have an altered appearance right after pruning, but the work is designed to make the trees stronger and healthier in years to come.  Trimmed branches will be picked up by the Department of Public Works.

For questions about pruning or to report street tree issues, please contact Mr. Wolowicz at trees@glenridgenj.org.

Favorite Doll Tea Returns

Fav

Returning for the 6th straight year is the much anticipated ANNUAL DOLL TEA on March 23rd. This has grown over the years to be one of The Women's Club's most successful and well attended fundraiser. The afternoon starts with the arrival of moms (dads), children and their dolls dressed up for a fashionable traditional HIGH TEA. Often the children and their dolls are dressed in coordinated outfits. Awaiting them at their table is an array of finger sandwiches, steaming teapots and refreshing lemonade. Over the next few hours the children can take their dolls to the beauty salon run by the Girls’ Club for a new doll hair style and a bit of pampering like a doll facial! There are raffle prizes to try your chance at, and vendors offering doll clothes, jewelry and small toys. The event is capped with a delicious array of delicate desserts served on our three tier trays. And finally, every child leaves with a prize to remember their afternoon with us.

This event has sold out every year, so please purchase your tickets early. It is an assigned seating event and we are unable to take walk-ins at the door, Click HERE to order tickets.
